The Unified Kingdom – Classroom Activity

Age Range: 6–16 (adaptable)
Time Required: 10–20 minutes
Subjects: PSHE, Citizenship, Geography, English, EAL

Learning Objectives

Pupils will:

  • Develop confidence speaking about themselves

  • Learn about different countries and cultures

  • Practise listening respectfully to others

  • Understand that diversity is part of modern Britain

Starter Activity (10–15 minutes)

  1. Display The Unified Kingdom poster clearly.

  2. Ask pupils to take a moment to look at the flags.

  3. Invite pupils to:

    • Point to a flag that represents their country, their family’s background, or a country important to them.

  4. Ask volunteers to share:

    • The name of the country

    • The language(s) spoken

    • One interesting fact, tradition, or personal connection

No pupil is required to speak — participation is voluntary.

Discussion Prompts (Optional)

  • What do you notice about how many countries are represented?

  • Why do you think all these flags form one Union Flag?

  • What does “Together We Rise – Divided We Fall” mean to you?

Extension Ideas

  • Write a short paragraph about personal heritage

  • Locate countries on a world map

  • Create a class display showing languages spoken

  • Use as a starting point for anti-bullying or respect discussions

Why This Works

  • Visual and inclusive

  • Encourages pride without pressure

  • Requires no specialist knowledge

  • Works equally well in mixed-ability and EAL classrooms
